March/April 2008
Vol. 3 No. 2

WELCOME

This month's article, The (Wellness) Bucket List, provides you with a tool for becoming more aware of what fills you up and what depletes your levels of wellness. Why not print it (on paper you are recycling), make a cup of tea and take a few minutes to add to your wellness wisdom?

In joyful wellness,

THE (WELLNESS) BUCKET LIST

Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. Practice wellness. Play with abandon. Laugh. Choose with no regret. Appreciate your friends. Continue to learn. Do what you love. Live as if this is all there is.

~ Mary Anne Radmacher

This article is not to be confused with the latest Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman film, "The Bucket List." We will not be discussing things you want to do before you, as they say, "kick the bucket." Instead, this is about your own personal bucket of wellness--things that fill up your bucket and things that poke holes in it NOW.

Years ago as a university student in a stress management class, I was introduced to this concept of a wellness bucket. We actually took crayons and paper and drew our own personal bucket. Inside the bucket we wrote down the things that we do to keep ourselves filled up, nourished, energized and healthy. In other words, what we did to keep our level of wellness high and our wellness bucket full. Then we used our artistic talents to depict the life stressors that poked holes in our bucket or caused our wellness to spill out. It was such a strong visual that I remember it so many years later. The idea behind the concept is to be sure we are always adding to our bucket, always filling it up again. Daily life, by its nature, depletes our wellness stash. Some big life events completely dry up the inside of the bucket and these events seem to create cracks that take much time to heal. Fortunately, life also gives us the opportunity to overflow with health, happiness and joyful wellness. Constantly replenishing your bucket is the goal. It's like your wellness savings bank! You want to keep making deposits.

So, if you like, pull out some crayons and paper and create a picture of your own wellness bucket. What would you place inside? You may include things like meditation, walking, Nia, yoga, painting, reading, nourishing foods, listening to music, taking supplements, getting enough sleep, making love, praying, laughing, connecting with family, volunteering, bicycling, curling up with your pet, enjoying a bubble bath, playing or watching your favorite sport, talking with a friend, going out to lunch . . . the wellness list is endless.

Then gently observe and put on paper the things that make your bucket leak. You can make things pour out the top, leak out the sides or pierce through the bottom. It's YOUR bucket! Note things that deplete your wellness stores. They may include illness, work stress, the death of someone dear, family stress, money concerns, too many tasks/responsibilities, relationship wounds, traffic, long commutes, critical self-talk, too much e-mail, sugary or processed foods. . . and yes, this list is endless too.

To benefit most from this activity, take a moment to commit to choosing something you will do every day to keep your bucket filled or replenished. You have a lot of choices on your wellness journey. Enjoy them!

LOSE THE CRAVINGS

If you crave carbohydrates or sugar, you are not alone. When we consume high-glycemic foods, it causes an over stimulation of the release of insulin. The more we eat, the more we crave. Medical studies show that over 85% of the carbohydrates we consume in the Western world are foods that have a high-glycemic value. If you love bagels, breads, crackers, pasta, potatoes, rice and sugar--did I say, you are not alone? Fortunately, there is a way to reset the body at a cellular level to break the cycle.

I eat a good variety of wholesome foods, but for the last five years I have over-used chocolate to sooth my soul. My chocolate habit was clearly associated with the sweetness missing after experiencing a very painful divorce. I still LOVE chocolate, but I no longer need to eat it daily or in the amounts I was consuming. I finally realized that as high as my blood sugar spiked, it fell to a matching low and it did not fit in with my overall level of health and fitness. I was eating well, doing Nia several times week, enjoying a great spiritual practice and was still chasing down many meals with my favorite chocolate! It also kept me feeling constantly hungry.

Last April, I discovered a program that has successfully reduced my craving for high-glycemic foods. This clinically tested 5-day behavior modification program, recommended by Christiane Northrup, MD, has totally reset my metabolism. It's been four months now and I am sustaining its benefits. It is also proving to be successful in jumpstarting healthier eating habits in my clients. Please email me at susan@wawellness.com if you would like to know more.
